WITHIN THE WALLS
GARDEN PROJECT

WELCOME
St Paul's Walden Bury, located in Hertfordshire, is renowned for its exceptional 18th-century formal gardens, which include a notable walled kitchen garden. The estate has been under the stewardship of the Bowes-Lyon family since 1720.

The walled kitchen garden, established in the 18th century, is nearly square in shape and divided into two sections by an internal wall. Historically, such walled gardens were integral to country estates, providing a controlled environment for cultivating fruits, vegetables, and herbs essential for the household. The walls offered protection from harsh weather and pests, creating a microclimate that extended the growing season.
In the early 19th century, the walled garden at St Paul's Walden Bury underwent significant developments. Recent analyses have uncovered historic features such as heated wall flues, which were innovative methods used to enhance the cultivation of delicate plants by providing additional warmth.

Today, the walled garden remains a point of interest for visitors, and provides a multitude of purposes to serve the community at large.
